What Is Digital Eye Strain (Computer Vision Syndrome)?

Digital eye strain (also called computer vision syndrome) is a group of eye and vision discomfort symptoms caused by prolonged use of computers, tablets, phones, and gaming screens. It is temporary and habit-related — not a disease — and it typically improves with changes to how, when, and where you look at screens.
Common symptoms
- •Sore, tired, burning, or itchy eyes
- •Blurred or double vision after long sessions
- •Headaches, especially around the brow
- •Neck and shoulder tension
- •Sensitivity to light and difficulty refocusing at distance
Why screens cause it
Three factors combine: reduced blinking (tear film dries out), sustained near focusing (muscles fatigue), and glare or poor contrast (eyes work harder). Long sessions without breaks amplify all three.
Who is most affected
Office workers and programmers, students studying on screens, and gamers with long sessions are the most commonly affected groups. Anyone regularly exceeding 4–6 hours of daily screen time can experience symptoms.
What helps
Regular distance breaks (20-20-20), ergonomic screen setup, reduced glare, warm compresses in the evening, and consistent lid hygiene. A monthly comfort routine tends to work better than occasional fixes.
